Ultrasound testing is a predominant and reliable method of medical imaging. It is painless, fast, cost-effective and depicts the inside of the body in real time. It does not use dangerous ionizing radiation, but high-frequency ultrasonic waves.
Like the sonar of ships, sound waves strike an instrument or a structure and bounce back or resonate. These waves are measured and converted into an image by a computer. Thus, the ultrasound gives information about the size, shape and structure of the internal organs and blood vessels. However, it is not possible to examine the stomach or intestinal tract, as ultrasound waves can not penetrate the air.
